MDC Lady Sharks Volleyball Team

 
 

Miami Dade College women’s volleyball has captured the State Championship for the 2008 season! This is the 18th state title for MDC volleyball in the past 19 years and the team has also qualified for the national championship tournament 35 out of 36 times. MDC was also undefeated in conference play, 8-0, and was named Southern Conference Champions, as well as Atlantic District Champions this season. The Lady Sharks were led by Rosa Medrano, Cristina Castrillon, Monica Dos Santos, Nataly Gutierrez, and Sandra Montoya in the State Championship Tournament. The team will now compete in the National Tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa Nov. 20-22 for a National Title.

MDC Volleyball place 3 players on All State/All-Region Volleyball Team, 3 players on the FCCAA All Tournament team, with Rosa Medrano who was named the tournaments Most Outstanding Player, and 6 Lady Sharks on First Team All Southern Conference. And for the second year in a row, Head Coach Kiko Benoit was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

#10 Monica Dos Santos

A sophomore setter/outside hitter for Miami Dade had to transition from an outside hitter to setter. As of 10/27, she averaged 10.7 assists per game at the Jefferson College Tournament. She also ranks 20th in the nation with 8.95 assists per game. She added 6 blocks, 23 kills and 32 digs and 3 service aces to help the Lady Sharks finish 1st place at the Jefferson Tournament and defeated the #1 and #8 team in the nation.

A sophomore outside hitter for Miami Dade College, who played in 13 games that week, had a hitting percentage of .458, 51 kills, an average of 3.92 per game.  Medrano added 6 service aces, and 2 blocks.  

As of 10/15– NJCAA: Medrano is ranked Nationally:  # 18 Hitting %, #3 Aces per game, #20 Kills per game

FCCAA Region 8 Rankings:  #5 Hitting %, #1 Aces per game, #15 Digs per game, #3 Kills per game

COLORADO SPRINGS -- Miami Dade College (Fla.) begins the 2008 NJCAA Division I Volleyball season with the nation's No. 1 ranking. The Sharks have won the national title four times since 1996 and have a total of eight national titles since 1986. Last season the Lady Sharks finished as runners-up at the national tournament to Western Nebraska Community College, ending the season at 33-1.

The top five teams in the pre-season poll include 2007 national tournament participants Frank Phillips College (Texas), College of Southern Idaho, Iowa Western Community College and Blinn College (Texas).

The NJCAA volleyball season officially begins August 22 and will conclude with the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship November 20-22 in Council Bluff, Iowa.
The Sharks, led by returning players Rosa Medrano, Monica Dos Santos and Nataly Gutierrez, will open their season September 4th against Palm Beach Community College. The Sharks home opener is September 9th vs. Broward College.
